For Immediate Release
(Muskoka, ON, March 29, 2026)…Two years after its establishment, the Dr. William Monk Community Healthcare Development Fund (DMCHDF) in Muskoka, Ontario marked its investment milestone by celebrating over $150,000 investment in rural primary care development.
Established in November 2023 via the Muskoka Community Foundation, the DMCHDF was created to attract, retain and develop primary care workers using a community-centric approach. Dr. Monk was a surgeon who served Muskoka and surrounding areas for over 55 years, and the fund was developed by his daughter, Kathryn Monk, to also honour his significant contribution to the well-being of Muskokans.
Funding-to-date has included:
- Hospice Muskoka (nurse practitioner)
- Mind-Aid (nurse practitioner and mobile hub outfitting)
- Town of Huntsville (physician office support)
- Town of Bracebridge (physician office support)
- Gravenhurst Rotary (physician office support)
- Georgian College PSW training (4 students, full tuition, Muskoka campus)
- Muskoka & Almaguin Ontario Health Team (incentive gifts for ROMP student recruitment, recruiter travel expenses)
- Township of Muskoka Lakes, Port Carling Health Hub (tangible office assets for independent physician establishment)
In 2026, the Dr. William Monk Community Health Care Fund’s projects will be assessed along with an environmental scan to determine the most strategic path forward for funding impactful rural healthcare development in Muskoka.
